Over 1,000 certified coaches work with youth who are between the impressionable ages of 7 and 14 years, training them in more than just how to play the sports. Emphasis is given to self-esteem, self-confidence, character building and sportsmanship. At an early age, the young athletes learn the benefits of working cooperatively in a team and the value of their contributions to the final outcome of the team.

Approximately 15,000 youth participated in CYO in the 2006-2007 academic year and the program continues to grow. Nearly 400 scheduled athletic events take place each week throughout Los Angeles County, under the supervision of almost 2,000 referees and 1,000 coaches.

Catholic Youth Organization offers today's youth a wholesome release of physical energy while they gain loyalty to their teammates and their school, as well as develop respect for their opponents, the officials and the rules by which the games are played. CYO emphasizes, by example, the importance of self-discipline, sportsmanship, team spirit, respect and responsibility. Through CYO, youth are challenged to stay off the streets and to use values that are vital to the development of a positive lifestyle.
