1999-2000 Annual Report

Cardinal Roger M. Mahony
Archbishop of Los Angeles
Dear Friends:

The work of Catholic Charities embodies the spirit of the Jubilee Year of promoting social justice and bringing glad tidings to the poor. Catholic Charities provides support and resources to make a difference in the lives of underemployed individuals, families faced with eviction, homeless mothers with children, individuals new to the United States, day laborers and the elderly who struggle to remain in their homes.

As the social service arm of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles since 1919, Catholic Charities reaches out to over 200,000 individuals and families each year who might not have anywhere else to turn. Through comprehensive support services, Catholic Charities serves those in need by providing basic necessities, ensuring stabilization, enabling self-sufficiency and fostering positive social change.

The agency's 29 community centers serve as a vital resource for those in need in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. These community centers help those who have encountered unforeseen circumstances or "crisis" situations on their journey toward self-sufficiency by providing case management, clothing, shelter referrals, rental and utility assistance and supplemental groceries.

Through the community centers' services and the programs provided by Catholic Charities, including low cost child care, basic skills training, job coaching, citizenship classes, individual and family counseling, organized sports activities and mentoring for youth, the agency has a profound effect on our communities.

I am so very grateful to each and every one of you for your continued commitment to helping those less fortunate in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles through your support of Catholic Charities.

Asking the Lord's blessings upon you, and with every best wish, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Him Eminence
Cardinal Roger Mahony
Archbishop of Los Angeles
