Dear Friends of Catholic Charities:A number of events have occurred this past year that have made a significant impact upon our country. The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11th have left vivid memories in all our minds of our vulnerability. The corruption discovered in some of the business in corporate America made us aware of the need for better accountability of top corporate officials. Finally, the scandal within the Church has challenged us to reexamine carefully our internal procedure when dealing with sexual abuse cases. Booker T. Washington once said, By patience and hard work, we brought order out of chaos, just as will be true of any problem if we stick to it with patience and wisdom and earnest effort. Historically, the American people have survived World Wars and a Great Depression because we have been patient and hard workers. Those same qualities will aid us through these challenging times. During the turmoil of the last year, Catholic Charities continued to serve those who were vulnerable and poor in our society. We must not forget those who are homeless, abandoned and without hope. Our sites, located in the poorest of the poor areas of our communities, have assisted over 250,000 people. Welfare-to-Work, a program of Catholic Charities, reaches out to the hardest to employ. We found jobs for over 275 people who had many barriers to employment. Many of our clients lacked a high school diploma or had a history of drug or alcohol dependency. As we examine new ways to increase our homeland security from terrorists attacks, so must we develop additional resources to assist the poor who face the attack of poverty in their lives. May God bless all of you who continue to support the work of Catholic Charities as we serve the most vulnerable in our society. We will address the issues of poverty with patience and wisdom and earnest effort. Sincerely, Rev. Monsignor Gregory A. Cox Executive Director |
