Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services

Instructor Felicidad Villegas teaches AYES interns how to search for job opportunities and how to work with a smile.

"If Archdiocesan Youth Employment had not given me the opportunity and tools to succeed, my life would have been more difficult. I had the encouragement of my family, school and AYES. They believed in me."

[Fernando Fernandez, in 1985, AYES intern and teacher’s aide; in 2003, Professor of Mathematics at East Los Angeles College]

Catholic Charities’ Archdiocesan Youth Employment Services (AYES) program, and its governmental, business, and non-profit partners, served 2,800 youth, who received paid internships, education, counseling, and career services. Wages and support services for AYES program participants amounted to $2.1 million. Support services included clothing, childcare, transportation and vocational training (i.e., tuition, books, union dues).
AYES received a grant from the County of Los Angeles to transition youth from probation camps into jobs.
The College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita offers AYESsponsored older youth an online one-credit college course in Customer Service Training. Eighteen students completed the pilot class and 15 youth registered for the next session; they accessed lectures, class-notes and quizzes via the Internet.
In the summer months, the AYES program, in collaboration with WIA, CalWORKs and the City of Los Angeles, provides approximately 1,250 summer jobs for disadvantaged youth who are placed in non-profit, forprofit, and public employment positions. Young people are grateful for gaining work experience and earning some personal income.

Liya Kapiyan, junior at BRAVO Medical Magnet High School and an AYES intern at the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center: "I work here after school because I want to gain experience for my future career as a Registered Nurse. This experience is invaluable for my success."

In the AYES classroom, students explore computer resources and learn how to prepare for job interviews.
