CYO Coach Wins Championship
For 45 years, Robert Calderon, has volunteered his time and experience with thousands of children who participate in the agency’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program. CYO is an after school and weekend athletic program for Catholic elementary and junior high schools throughout Los Angeles County. CYO promotes and develops good sportsmanship, cooperation, camaraderie, respect, responsibility and the acceptance of both victory and defeat.

Mr. Calderon began coaching CYO teams in 1957 and a championship win had eluded him throughout the years. The 2002 season, however, would prove to be different. At the start of the varsity football season, Mr. Calderon knew it would be his last season coaching before he moved to Nevada and that made this year more special. But he would have never guessed he would lead his team to a championship victory. Out of 149 teams that participated, from Manhattan Beach to Santa Fe Springs, Mr. Calderon’s team, Assumption School, Los Angeles, fought hard for their victory. Tom Davidson, CYO Program Director, stated, “Any of four teams could have won the championship, but Bob’s team endured and won the big prize.”

The Calderon family has a history of support and dedication to the CYO program. Mr. Calderon’s father, also a coach, gave 40 years of service to CYO. Without coaches like the Calderons, CYO would not be the outstanding athletic program it is. On behalf of Catholic Charities and the staff, volunteers, and participants of CYO, many thanks go out to Robert Calderon for his 45 years of committed service.
