San Gabriel Region
Helps Strengthen Families

In April, Catholic Charities’ Brownson House Community Center in East Los Angeles distributed Easter baskets, filled with toys and candies, to needy children in the community. The baskets were donated by Federated Logistics and Operations and its’ employees.
Catholic Charities’ Building Strong Families program, at Brownson House Community Center in East Los Angeles, offers support and services to families to help them develop stronger foundations so they may better cope with and seek solutions to their problems. The program provides case management, resources and referrals coordination, life skills training, food distribution and emergency assistance.

When “Brenda,” came to Catholic Charities’ Brownson House, she was suffering from depression and was dealing with personal problems. The Building Strong Families program helped her find counseling and provided her with life skills training to properly handle the day-to-day issues she was facing. According to Brenda’s husband, the program has helped his wife tremendously. He states, “Every time my wife comes to the program, she leaves with hope that things will be better.”

Another service providing critical assistance in the San Gabriel Region is Clinica Salud Sagrada Familia, a program of Catholic Charities’ Psychological Services in Pomona. Dedicated staff, led by Sister Rose Anita Ramirez, provide affordable bi-lingual counseling services for individuals, families, couples, groups and children with mental health issues, which include parent-child conflicts, marital-relational problems, domestic violence and communication breakdown. The goal of the program is to provide individuals and families, especially those who have limited or no financial resources, with access to professional counseling services.

Through the hard work of Mary Romero, San Gabriel Regional Director, Catholic Charities has become a trusted social services provider in the San Gabriel Region. Last year, the Region served over 28,000 unduplicated clients.

First Annual CYO Soccer Tournament a Success

Soccer players from St. Paul the Apostle School and St. Paul of the Cross School congratulate each other after a game at the First Annual CYO Soccer Tournament.
The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) staff listened attentively to the request for soccer from boys and girls participating in CYO, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles. Although soccer is not a permanent sport of CYO, the First Annual Soccer Tournament was created to determine the amount of interest in soccer by all schools participating in the CYO program. “I was expecting 4 teams to sign up for the tournament,” said Tom Davidson, CYO Director, “instead we had 12 boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams sign up to play.”
The tournament was held on April 3rd and 4th at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower. Due to a last minute scheduling conflict at the girls’ original competition site, tournament staff decided to make the teams co-ed. “It is nice to see the girls and boys be able to play so well together,” stated Tom Davidson. Teams were comprised of girls and boys in fifth to eighth grades. The winners were: 1st place - St. Turibius School, Los Angeles; 2nd place - Holy Angels School, Arcadia; 3rd place - St. Paul the Apostle School, Los Angeles.

In March, CYO hosted its Annual Hall of Fame Dinner, honoring long-time volunteers. This year, two honorees served the program as volunteer coaches for over 50 years each, Clinton “Pete” Ellis (55 years) and Archie Lifland (51 years). The long-term commitment of the new inductees is a reflection of the quality of the CYO program.
