All Set for a New School Year

Over 180 excited children crowded the El Monte Community Center with their mothers and grandmothers, eagerly waiting their turn to receive free haircuts and school supplies before school began this September.

There were representatives from several collaborating agencies present at the event, including 22 volunteers from the Rosemead Adult School who generously offered their time and haircutting skills to the children. An outreach worker from Citrus Valley Health Partners was on-site, enrolling clients into the Medical and Healthy Family Programs, as well as providing valuable information on Diabetes, which has become a growing health concern in the San Gabriel Region. In addition, a representative from Pacific Clinics was available to sign up interested participants for an upcoming workshop on “Building Self-Esteem.” Catholic Charities also took the opportunity to enroll families in the discount CARE programs of Southern California Edison and The Gas Company. Free hotdogs, juice, cookies and ice cream were provided to all the participants.

“We are very happy to make this annual service available to the community. The number of children has steadily increased throughout the years. Families usually incur additional expenses to ready their children for school. When a parent has 2 or 3 children, money saved with the free haircuts can be used for other things. We are also pleased this year that the employees of Mattel, Inc. have been generous in providing the school supplies, including backpacks, crayons, paper, and pens. “The Church’s Chicken”, next door, has also been generous in providing lunch for the many volunteers who help us make this day a very successful and happy one,” said Elena Guzman, El Monte Site Supervisor.

The San Gabriel Regional Office is located at 1307 Warren St., Los Angeles, CA. Telephone: (323) 266-3130. For a complete list of programs and services offered in the San Gabriel Region, visit Catholic Charities’ Website www.CatholicCharitiesLA.org.
