New Shoes Change Client’s Life
Each day, people come to Catholic Charities to ask for help...

“Roberta”, a Santa Monica resident, came to Our Lady of the Angels Region-Western Area’s St. Robert’s Center in Venice with an unusual request. Due to long-standing orthopedic problems, she could not walk without being in constant pain, and she faced the possibility of amputation of both of her feet. She needed a new, specially-designed pair of orthopedic shoes, which cost $677, to help her walk again with less discomfort. Roberta had worked part-time in the Los Angeles court system until her feet became severely deformed and she was forced to leave her position. Her only source of income was her Social Security Disability Insurance, which amounted to $660 a month. Of that amount, Roberta paid $600 per month for rent.

At St. Robert’s Center, Kay Bailiff, Coordinator of the Weekend Food Pantry program, listened to Roberta’s problem. After receiving some special donations from supporters of St. Robert’s Center, Roberta was able to purchase the shoes. Her new high-top black shoes have enabled her to get back on her feet and even volunteer at the courthouse. Now that she has shoes which alleviate some of her chronic pain, Roberta is more hopeful about the future. Kay Bailiff says that it is especially difficult for those who have been self-sufficient for their entire lives to reach out and ask for help. In Roberta’s case, she needed someone to listen to her and someone to care.
