Catholic Charities of Los Angeles
Press Release (August 30, 2005)

National Collection for Hurricane Relief
A Response to Hurricane Katrina

The devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina affected large parts of the southern United States, especially Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Millions of people were displaced and are in need of assistance. Catholic Charities USA and its Disaster Response teams are among the primary responders to such natural disasters. Working with the local Catholic Charities in affected areas, the agency has a professional and well-developed system for reviewing the needs and providing help where it can accomplish the most. At this time, the possibility exists of more hurricanes coming in the next several weeks. All Catholic parishes are asked to take a collection for the relief of the victims of the hurricanes of this season.

Please do not state "Hurricane Katrina" in case there are other hurricanes this year. We would want the funds to be used for relief of all 2005 hurricanes.

In 1994, after the devastating Northridge Earthquake, Los Angeles received aid in the amount of $7 million from generous people across the United States. This generosity helped the local community rebuild their lives after the natural disaster. Now it is our turn to help those suffering from the devastation inflicted by the hurricanes.

Thank you very much for your generous support.
