Clients at Loaves & Fishes Food PantryHunger is more prevalent than you might think.  A 2008 USDA study reports that nearly 49 million Americans are hungry or "food insecure."  Of these, 32.4 million are adults (which is nearly 15% of all American adults) and 16.7 million are children (accounting for 22% of all American children).

The current economic climate has brought 38% - 40% more clients to Catholic Charities of Los Angeles' community centers seeking supplemental food.  With the exorbitant cost of housing in Southern California, many individuals and families spend the majority of their income on simply keeping a roof over their heads, which leaves little left over for meals.  Catholic Charities' 24 food pantries are situated in many of the poorest neighborhoods, where the need for food is great.  In the 2008-2009 fiscal year, Catholic Charities provided approximately 520,000 units of food, each normally consisting of several bags of nutritious groceries to create well-balanced meals.

We can always use more non-perishable food in our community center food pantries.  Common items that are consistently needed include those with protein, i.e. canned tuna, beans, chili, beef stew and peanut butter, in addition to rice, pasta, canned vegetables and fruit.  Diapers and baby wipes are usually in demand, too.  For specific needs in your area, click here.
