The causes of homelessness are as varied as the people it affects. Unemployment, low income levels, a high cost of living, lack of family or community support, and mental illness, together or separate, often present major challenges to obtaining permanent housing. Catholic Charities tackles the root causes of homelessness at homeless programs in Long Beach, Los Angeles and Lancaster to transform the lives of men, women and children. In addition to receiving shelter, residents work with case managers to address and overcome the factors contributing to their homelessness. Through counseling, education, job training and support, those who were once homeless prepare for independent futures.
