| Long Beach Program Prevents Homelessness |
|
Catholic Charities’ community center in Long Beach, in conjunction with the City of Long Beach and its collaborative partners, is participating in the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP) by reaching out to families and individuals facing eviction or a utility shut-off. As part of the program, case managers meet with clients at risk of homelessness to assess what help is needed and plan for the future. In addition, families receive short-term support through rental and utilities assistance.
“Often that extra boost is just what is needed,” said Patricia Chaidez, lead case manager. Any family can face a sudden crisis such as a medical emergency or a loss of a job that threatens their stability and income. This new program looks at the roots of homelessness and addresses them quickly. “Housing First” is one of the key components in the current fight against homelessness. Shelters are a very expensive way of housing people because they require 24 hour staff, food, and meals. HPRP can prevent many families from ever entering the shelter system. Since the program began in October, Catholic Charities in Long Beach has assisted over 100 households with rent and utilities. |
